Green Exercise: Strength

Green exercise is any activity outdoors. There is a synergy between the proven great effects of exercise and the proven great effects of being outdoors. They amplify one another.

We understand that exercise, such as walking, cycling, or gardening, are proven to have huge health benefits.

Strength and Balance Activities Make You Live Longer

There is consistent evidence that preserving muscular strength and power in middle and older age help us to live longer.

Strength or resistance activities are using weights.

Balance activities are yoga, pilates, Tai Chi.

Muscle and Bone Strengthening Are Neglected

” Muscle and bone strengthening and balance activities help to keep us living longer but they are neglected” says The Centre for Better Aging and Public Health England .

“People’s understanding of walking more and doing aerobic activity, keeping up the heart rate, has grown, but there is a  need for us all to do two sessions of strength and balance exercise a week.”

Green Exercise

If you can do these outside you will get even more health benefits. Prepare to feel less anxious, a surge in self esteem, and your mood lift.

Until next time please say it with me,

  1. We live at a lake and I am able to get lots of green exercise walking around the neighborhood and down by the lake. I just wish the weather wasn’t so hot right now. It literally takes my breath away when I am outdoors now.

  2. Exercising outside is always so much more enjoyable, too! Great point that balance and strength usually get neglected. I love strength and balance workouts more than cardio, though, so now I’m thinking I’ll just take it outside more often!

  3. Hiking is one of my favorite activities because I definitely feel recharged by nature. Perhaps I need to integrate some more weight and balance exercises into my hikes.
