7 Health Benefits of Walking (and Working) With Beauty Entrepreneur

Forbes Magazine says that beauty entrepreneur and pioneer Jennifer Walsh is both a ” a visionary and a risk taker — she is a pioneer in the world of beauty and has become one of the industry’s leading experts over the past 18 years.”

I am ecstatic. Jennifer Walsh subscribed to my Treesmendus blog and she joined our Ditch Inside for Outside Facebook Group. She did this because she wants to get everyone outside — walking with her.

Walsh  says “What inspires me most is nature.”

This inspiration in nature in Central Park, New York, New York  is what led her to “A Walk with Walsh” is a new online series where she interviews people from around the country that are innovators, CEO’s, and philanthropists.

Walsh says ”  I wanted to give a voice and a platform to people that are truly making a difference and doing really unique things in business and within their own communities around the country. I am doing it in Central Park for many reasons but mostly because Central Park is where I feel so inspired. Being in nature and walking allows others to be more open to talking about things they might not normally do.”

Jennifer  is trying to get people everywhere to take a break outside — to walk with her in Central Park. And when you do –  put your picture on instagram with the hashtag #walkwithwalsh.

Walsh Gives Interviewees The Health Benefits of Trees

One  look at her facebook page “Walk with Walsh” shows that Jennifer is the real deal. She  knows and promotes the science of why people are more relaxed in parks.

And I bet she knows, even if her interviewees do not — while they are walking and talking, they are getting bonus health benefits of being close to trees.

Science Says Trees and Green Spaces Work Wonders

While Jennifer Walsh interviews CEOs, they are inhaling the bonus health benefits of trees. And here is the science that says so.

University of Toronto research team led by  Marc Berman shows that: tree aerosols drift down from the tree canopies to make us healthier, happier, have less disease, and feel like we are at least 10k richer.

Award winning investigative journalist Florence Williams introduces her book “The Nature Fix” with MacKerron’s Mappiness Project. Through one million geolocations on a smart phone app his work shows that  on average, people are significantly and substantially happier outdoors in all green or natural habitat.

Dr Li, (father of forest bathing) is a medical physician in Forestry Medicine and an immunologist at University of Nippon, Japan. He did the first peer reviewed study showing that time spent in a forested area in Japan increases immune system regulating NK cells and cancer fighting protein cells.

In the medical journal the Lancet, Dan Crouse and colleagues showed that: living within two blocks of trees and green space makes you live longer

The Max Planck Institute in Germany just published a study that shows being near forests increases brain plasticity. Older adults in Berlin who live near trees have healthier brains. In particular, the amygdala, the stress reduction portion of the brain, is bigger, healthier and more active in those living close to forests.

“Green exercise” or any physical activity outdoors (from stroll in the park or a bike through the forest) lifts mood and self esteem.  Professor Richard Mitchell’s University of Glasgow in Scotland. team studied two thousand physically active people (walking, cycling and jogging) in natural and non-natural settings. The team found that only outdoor activities in grass and trees improved mental health. University of Glasgow’s Mitchell found “there was a 50% improvement in people’s mental health if they were active outside around trees. “

Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar, is a medical professor at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He thinks trees might be more effective than statins in preventing heart disease and stroke. He is leading the Green Heart Project. Eight thousand trees (8,000 big trees!) will be planted in this $14.5 million research project is in Louisville. Members of the Green Heart Project team “instead of giving someone a pill, we are giving them greeness.”

7 Health Benefits of Walking (and Working ) With Jennifer Walsh

So when Jennifer Walker gets her CEOs, philanthropists, and innovators community outside for a walk with her in Central Park, you can bet they feel better.

Specifically  interviewees will experience:1)better immune system regulation, 2) increased development of cancer fighting proteins, 3) increased heart health (like taking a statin), 4) increased brain plasticity, 5) increased self esteem, decreased stress, increased mental health, 6) increased life expectancy, and 7) a feeling of being at least 10k richer.

Pretty nice for an afternoon in the park.
