All you have to do is step outside and breathe.
Or better still, find a frozen river to skate away on.
No matter where you are – as long as you are outside – you are getting the benefits of tree aerosols. The healthy microbials are in the winds.
See trees with new eyes.
See academic research studies that show that being close to trees lifts our moods, changes our mindsets, stop disease, make us live longer and feel richer.
Urban trees work even harder to sweep the air clean.
Come to Winnipeg Where River Skating is Free Too
The Forks is a calm and uplifting place. It is a Winnipeg tradition to skate, walk, run, slide, and bike along the longest natural frozen skate trail in the world.
Skating at Forks is free. And so is access to 25 one of a kind warming huts along the way. These warming huts are creations of art and architecture. There is an annual Warming Huts Competition. See the warming huts website.
This year The Forks had 180 submissions from around the world.
“They think of Winnipeg as a very exotic place, which I think a lot of Winnipeggers will roll their eyes at, but they do. We’re really excited to bring them to Winnipeg in the coldest part of January.” said Fork’s CEO Jordan.
Winnipeg can be freezing cold, so we dress for the cold.
Skate into a hut on the ice if the wind starts blowing.
This year the designers from Mexico, Estonia, and Vancouver, British Columbia, won.
The winners were “Golden Bison”, designed by David Alberto; “Arroyo Tafolla” from Morelia Michoac and Mexico; “Totem”, designed by Architecture Office from Tallinn, Estonia; and “The Trunk”, designed by Camille Bianchi and Ryder Thalheimer from Vancouver, BC.
“The Trunk” was the most fun because you are inside of a tree looking up into the sky.
The creators, Bianchi and Thalheimer, call it “an inhabitable tree – it is constructed of layers of laminated wood, each cut in the shape of a growth ring.”

Come to Winnipeg and The Forks. We can play outside all day.
And say it with me

Looks like lots of fun! I love to skate outside.
That looks so fun! I’d love to do that. I’ve only ever ice skated on man-made rinks.
Hi Verla! I’ve been to The Forks once…in August. The weather was much different than that in this post! It’s not called Winter-peg for nothing, eh? 🙂
The way everyone skates with their kids in sleds looks so fun. They’re going so fast. We’d be going a lot slower that’s for sure lol. This looks so relaxing.
I never thought of skating at a place like that. I grew up on a lake, so that is the place I think about skating first.
I’ve never been ice skating before. This looks like so much fun and such a beautiful place.
We love being outside, even in the cold winters of Alaska! The fresh air and forest smells are great for our well-being!
I never knew about warming huts. Thank you for sharing!
Wow, it must be so cold there! Thats impressive that you still get out and enjoy it!
This looks so fun! Much more fun than skating on a man-made ice rink. I enjoyed reading your post, and great videos!
How fun. I am a horrible ice skater but I still think it would be fun to skate a frozen river.
That looks so cool! How fun!
Healthy tree, healthy me – I love that!
What a lovely idea! Aboutsolutly fell in love with the visual of the inside of the warming hut. Beautiful. We are in the states, but are planning a weekend out in the snow. Can’t wait!
That looks magical!! I would love to ice river skate!
This looks like such fun!
This looks like a great idea! Love the suggestions on the items!
This looks so fun!! Although I want to be the one getting pulled!!
Thank you for sharing…I loved being inside ‘the trunk’!
Ice river skating sounds amazing and fun! And you get the benefits of the trees while you’re at it!
