Best Batteries For A Longer Time Outside in the Cold

Winter. It is coming. We can feel it in our bones. We will feel it  in our fingers and toes. So let’s make it easier on ourselves. Let’s make it easier to get outside and stay longer outside in the cold.  Our outside healthy, happy bodies will thank us.

The Emotional Component of Being Cold

There is an emotional component to being outside in the cold. If our hands and feet aren’t warm, it’s hard to enjoy being outside. If going outside means finger and toe pain, why would we do it? For us, going outside is no fun. We avoid the cold for good reason.

Reasons for Cold Feet and Hands

Havard Medical School in this link “Causes of Cold Feet” explains  that cold feet can be simply hereditary.

Cold feet (and hands) are caused when the small blood vessels constrict to conserve body heat. Our feet become cold to keep our internal organs warm.

Chronic Disease: Raynaud’s Syndrome

Dr. Kormos  explains that with the  chronic disease,  Raynaud’s syndrome, the small blood vessels “overcompensate” for cold temperatures. This makes our feet feel cold, appear blue and white. Then once our feet thaw out, our feet turn red. And he forgot to mention the numbness, followed  by unbearably intense pain during the thawing process!

Just Being Fit Makes Us Colder

Another reason for being cold is that we are fit. Less body fat in general means less insulation agains the cold, Dr Kormer says people who have less body fat (and therefore less insulation) need to conserve more heat, so the feet become cold to keep our internal organs warm.

Harvard Medical School Solution: Use Warm Socks

In the same article Dr. Kormer gives us the solution: Use Warm Socks. But let’s go one better. Let’s get the latest technology.

Late Season golfers, farmers, hunters, outside workers, and skiers know about these battery heated gloves and socks.

So it’s time we used them too.

Try these rechargeable battery heated gloves and socks your hands and feet will always be warm.

Research shows that the more time you spend outside close to trees – the better. The longer the better. These batteries will keep you outside longer in the cold.

We cross country skiers like to be outside in the cold for 4 hours or so.

My Hands Are Always Warm!

There are three lights and settings on both the gloves. One light is low heat and all three is full strength heat.

The gloves seem to change the target temperature rather than directly changing the amount of heat generated. That’s good!

If your hands are already warm or it’s not that cold outside, then the heaters don’t have to work as hard. When my hands are warm, I just turn them off.

I’d advise using some care when removing the battery packs for charging.

The wiring and connector that stays in the glove does have a strain relief, but it looks to be a stress point that could wear over years of use.

It’ll likely outlast the rest of the gloves if I’m careful when changing the battery packs.

Your Help Matters THANK YOU

If you go through any of my blog links and decide to buy the gloves or anything else at all, Amazon still gives me the scant commission.

By doing this for me, you show Amazon and Google that people read my blog. And this will keep my blog going in the long run.

The Comments I Get on The Gloves

I’ve started using these gloves for everyday things like walking, driving with a cold steering wheel, curling, and doing errands. It’s great to arrive at your destination with warm hands.

People are always interested when they see the lights. It is fun to have lighted up apparel as an aging adult.

When I was skating outside on the Winnipeg River (at The Forks) one day, a woman about my age, asked me if the lights were for safety. An added bonus I suppose. When I told her about the warmth she asked me how to get some.

When I arrived at my specialist appointment all the nurses gathered around to get the information on the gloves because they wanted some. Nurses know care and comfort when they see it.

My ski buddies call me a Power Ranger. And I feel like one in these. You will too.

Get Socks Too

To keep your feet warm, get the rechargeable battery operated, heated socks. These are like having a heating pad on your feet.

You can adjust the heat by pressing a little button on the side. I put them on hot before leaving the house and by the time I get outside I slip my hand into the little battery pocket in the sock and turn them down to the lowest level.

When I stop outside to visit I turn them back up again. They allow me to be outside in any conditions. They are game changers.

This is a US Amazon.com link to prettier and less expensive ones than I have.

This is the Canadian link Amazon.ca link. These I will order again this year. Just to have around the house. The comfort they provide to cramping feet and toes!

Keep Your Cell Phone Battery Alive in The Cold Too

We need our cell phones in the cold too. The cold rapidly zaps the battery life in our cell phones.  So consider this portable cell recharger for your outdoor time.

Your cell phone will be ready for next click of the snow covered trees.

Advice From A Cool Apple Store Guy

When I went to my Apple Store to ask if there was something to buy to keep my phone charged in the cold, the cool guy  said “no.”

But he said some of his snow boarding buddies do this:

“Put an elastic band with one hand grabber around your cell and one around your portable cell phone battery charger.

This prevents any freeze up.

And then pop them both into a zip lock bag to prevent any moisture damage.”

So when you see the cool kids snowboarding and taking videos you know their secret.

Add Handwarmers

The only drawback to these pocket hand warmers or grabbers is that they give uneven results: too hot or too cold in some places.

So NOW we are set.

Whether we are too fit (lol), aging, have a chronic disease or just born this way — we are armed against the cold.

Let’s get outside and stay outside!!

(just like our mothers would tell us in their firm voices ).

And let’s take a deep breath. Please say it with me:

“Healthy Tree, Healthy Me”,

Until next time, Verla

  1. Battery powered gloves and socks?! Whoa, that is amazing! I spend a lot of time outside, but I don’t usually travel far from home- I have 20 acres right here to explore, so when I need to warm up, I just scoot inside and gather around the coal stove! These would be amazing for winter picnics and skiing.

  2. I honestly had no idea that most of this stuff existed. I love the concept of the hand warmers and the boots with built in warmers – so useful! Thanks for sharing!

  3. One February we went to Chicago and it was the coldest I had ever been in. We each wore 2 jackets, gloves, hats, and scarves and were still cold. Wish we had brought those nifty had warmers with us then. Will remember this tip for our trip to Alaska that’s for sure.

  4. You have shared some very helpful tips here. I might not have thought to be intentional about keeping my cellular telephone warm. Whenever I visit your blog and read about the benefits of trees, it makes me smile.
